Seeking Autism Testing For Yourself or A Loved One?

·       You see the world differently from others and seek a deeper understanding of yourself.

·       You’ve looked back and wondered if the challenges in your life might be explained by autism.

·       You experience exhaustion and burnout from masking in social, school, or work settings.

·       Other professionals focused on ADHD, anxiety, or depression, but it still felt like something was missing or didn’t fully explain your experiences.

Are you experiencing challenges across various aspects of life that affect your daily functioning? Perhaps you struggle to interpret social cues, which may have led to misunderstandings and difficulty maintaining friendships. Maybe you’re tired of feeling isolated and it has led you to “mask” your natural behaviors and inclinations to fit in.

Do loud noises, crowded environments, or sensory stimulation easily become overwhelming? Maybe it’s affecting your ability to focus or participate in social settings. Perhaps unpredictability and disruptions in schedules are sources of stress that others don’t understand. Does your preference for routines and structure make it challenging to cope with sudden changes?

You may be considering an autism evaluation so that you can understand yourself better and get the support, services, and accommodations you need.

In addition, Dr. Anna specializes in working with high-masking women and BIPOC individuals whose experiences are often overlooked or misunderstood, leading to under- or misdiagnosis in traditional evaluations.

If you’re unsure whether a full evaluation is the right next step for you or a loved one, Dr. Hung offers free Autism screenings. Many individuals and families find it helpful to begin with brief screening questionnaires before deciding whether to pursue a comprehensive autism evaluation. These tools alone cannot diagnose autism. Only an evaluation can determine a diagnosis, but screeners can be a helpful first step in identifying meaningful patterns.

All autism evaluations are available via telehealth, making virtual autism testing accessible wherever you are in California, Florida, or across 40+ PSYPACT states.

Helpful Screening Tools:

Perhaps You’re The Parent Of A Neurodivergent Child

·      Your child is misunderstood by people who aren’t familiar with their quirks and unique ways of expressing themselves.

·       Your child’s insistence on maintaining routines caused emotional outbursts.

·       Your child struggles to maintain friendships or connect with peers.

·      You suspect neurodivergence in your child and are looking to gain clarity and professional insight.

Many autistic children experience differences in flexibility, sensory processing, attention, anxiety, and perspective-taking. At school, these may be misunderstood as “challenging behaviors,” sometimes resulting in disciplinary action. Without support and understanding, these experiences can lead to growing anxiety, frustration, and self-doubt as children feel misunderstood or pressured to fit neurotypical expectations.

Whether you’re seeking an autism evaluation for yourself or your child, you’re encouraged to reach out. The autism testing process at Wildflower Psych can shed light on the underlying challenges children, teens, and adults face and improve their outcomes in school and work.

Wildflower Psych’s neurodiversity-affirming autism assessments include guidance, psychoeducation, and personalized recommendations to help you or your child better understand needs, advocate effectively at school or work, and access appropriate accommodations and supports.

Many Autistic People Experience the World Differently

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social communication, behavior, and sensory processing. Autism is often identified in early childhood (after developmental differences emerge), but can be diagnosed later in life as well. Autism presents differently in each individual, making a thorough, individualized assessment essential.

Results from one study suggest the prevalence of autism among youth has tripled from 2013 to 2022. As of 2023, approximately 1 in 36 children in the US is diagnosed with autism*. This reflects a significant increase in autism diagnoses over recent decades.

While most autism diagnoses occur in early childhood, autism is prevalent among adults as well. Estimates suggest that around 5.4 million U.S. adults, or about 2.2% of the adult population, are on the autism spectrum, though many remain undiagnosed until later in life. Growing awareness has led to more teens and adults seeking autism assessments to better understand their areas of growth, unique needs, and strengths.

In Today’s Busy World, Autism Can Be Hard to Identify

Factors such as individual idiosyncrasies, nuances in behavior, and wide diversity among autistic individuals often cause delays in obtaining autism spectrum assessment. Furthermore, family values and socio-cultural attitudes about ASD may further delay individuals or families from speaking with a mental health clinician about their concerns.

Obtaining an autism assessment can give you a clearer understanding of your needs and help you cultivate more self-awareness. An autism evaluation will provide diagnostic clarification so you can then make informed decisions about services, interventions, and accommodations to best serve you and help you achieve your goals.

What To Expect During Autism Evaluation Process

All autism evaluations are conducted primarily via telehealth on a secure, HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform, with hybrid in-person options available on a limited basis in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sarasota, FL.

Drawing from over a decade of neuropsychological and psychological testing, Dr. Hung helps youth and young adults understand autism. Here’s what to expect during the autism testing process:

  1. Initial Consultation: On the first visit, Dr. Anna will meet with you for about 1 hour to discuss your main concerns, goals, and relevant history. This helps tailor the assessment to ensure all of your concerns are addressed.

  2. Comprehensive Evaluation: After the initial consultation, the assessment process utilizes a combination of evidence-based tools and behavioral observations. Wildflower Psych uses standardized testing instruments, such as the ADOS-2, AVABO, SRS-2, CARS-2, SPM-2, and MIGDAS-2, along with complementary assessments that explore related challenges in areas such as executive functioning, masking/camouflaging, adaptive functioning, anxiety, and sensory processing.

  3. Collateral and Self-Reports: For child and adolescent clients, parents/caregivers, family members, and teachers may be included in the process to obtain collateral information and gather a full picture of the individual’s needs and strengths across settings. For adults, the evaluation process includes standardized questionnaires, conversations about your experiences, and a diagnostic clinical interview. With your permission, input from family members, friends, or significant others may also be included when helpful, but this is not required.

  4. Personalized Feedback Session: Following the autism evaluation, Dr. Anna will meet with you for a detailed feedback session to review results, discuss recommendations, and address any questions. Results are presented in a clear and supportive manner, highlighting both strengths and areas of growth.

  5. Customized Recommendations: You’ll be provided clear and actionable recommendations, including referrals for therapy, occupational therapy, social skills training, academic accommodations, community resources, and letters of support. Students will receive necessary documentation and helpful templates to communicate with the school and navigate the process of establishing or updating an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.

  6. Continued Support Beyond the Evaluation: Receiving answers is only one part of the process. As part of a personalized, concierge-style approach to care, clients are always welcome to contact Dr. Hung directly for ongoing guidance, clarification, updated documentation, or support navigating future educational, workplace, or life needs.

  • A formal diagnosis can provide clarity, validate experiences, and explain challenges in areas like social communication, sensory processing, or daily functioning. It also opens doors to tailored support, including therapeutic interventions, educational resources, and workplace accommodations, allowing individuals to access the resources they need to thrive.

  • Absolutely. Many autistic adults are not identified until later in life, and seeking answers as an adult is more common than many people realize. Dr. Anna provides autism evaluations for individuals across the lifespan, from toddlers as young as 18–24 months through adulthood. While autism is often recognized in childhood, many people grow up without a diagnosis, especially those who learned to mask their differences, developed strong coping strategies, or were misunderstood as simply “shy,” “quirky,” anxious, sensitive, or socially awkward.

An autism evaluation in adulthood can still be highly accurate and deeply validating. For many adults, the process brings clarity to lifelong experiences, patterns, and challenges that may never have fully made sense before. Receiving a diagnosis can help individuals better understand themselves, access appropriate supports or accommodations, improve relationships and self-advocacy skills, and move forward with greater self-compassion. It is never too late to seek understanding and support.

  • Yes — and this is an area Dr. Anna is especially passionate about. Autism in women and girls is frequently missed or misdiagnosed because it often presents differently than in males — with more subtle social differences, higher levels of masking and camouflaging, and internalized struggles that can be mistaken for anxiety, depression, or simply being "quiet" or "shy." Many women reach adulthood having never received a diagnosis, despite a lifetime of feeling different or misunderstood. Dr. Anna has specialized experience evaluating high-masking individuals and adults seeking answers for the first time later in life.

  • While there is some overlap — both evaluations assess attention, executive functioning, and behavioral patterns — autism testing and ADHD testing focus on different areas. Autism testing takes a broader look at social communication, sensory processing, flexibility, and patterns of behavior across settings, using specialized tools like the ADOS-2. ADHD testing primarily evaluates attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive functioning. Because autism and ADHD frequently co-occur, Dr. Anna often evaluates for both within a single comprehensive assessment when clinically indicated, ensuring nothing is missed. Learn more about ADHD testing at Wildflower Psych.

  • Schedule a free 20-minute phone or Zoom consultation directly here, or reach out via the contact page and Dr. Anna will follow up within one business day. Autism testing sessions are conducted primarily via telehealth, with limited in-person appointments available in Cupertino, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Sarasota, FL.
